UAS COMPLIANCE & CENTRALIZED DRONE POLICY PORTAL
Compliance FAQ
FAA REGISTRATION
All unmanned aircraft systems weighing more than 0.55 lbs must be registered via the FAA DroneZone portal. Operators must mark the UAS with the registration number in a visible manner before conducting any flight operations in the national airspace.
PART 107 LICENSING
To operate a drone commercially, you must obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate. This requires passing an initial aeronautical knowledge test at an FAA-approved testing center. Pilots must maintain currency by completing recurrent training every 24 months.
CAMPUS PERMISSIONS
UAS operations on Liberty University property require formal authorization from the LU UAS Department. Flight requests must be submitted at least 48 hours in advance, detailing the flight location, purpose, and proof of a Part 107 certification.
STATE COMPLIANCE
Virginia state laws restrict the use of UAS over correctional facilities, state parks without a permit, and private property where an expectation of privacy exists. Operators should consult Virginia Code § 19.2-60.1 for specific statutory requirements.
ALTITUDE & SAFETY
Unless granted a specific waiver by the FAA, UAS flight is restricted to an altitude of 400 feet above ground level in unrestricted airspace. Within controlled airspace, pilots must obtain LAANC authorization prior to takeoff to ensure coordination with manned aircraft and will often be restricted to an altitude lower than 400 feet above ground level.
